Large turbines and 19-turbine project for Italian wind power summer

Large turbines and 19-turbine project for Italian wind power summer

At the end of May, Danish wind turbine manufacturer Vestas announced two additional turbine orders from Italy with a combined, very large additional green electricity generation capacity of 127 megawatts (MW). The wind farm sizes of 32 and even 95 MW are striking for the Mediterranean country, which in one of the two cases will even lead to one of the largest onshore wind energy generation sites. Also striking are the turbine sizes, in the form of the Vestas turbines ordered for both locations, with 162-meter rotor diameters and 6.4 MW nominal output. Until now, wind farms in Italy had lagged significantly behind the development of turbine technology in places like Germany due to slow approval procedures when it came to introducing the currently largest wind turbines. Vestas announced that the five V-162 turbines of the smaller wind farm are scheduled to be connected to the grid in the third quarter of next year, and the five V-162 turbines of the larger wind farm, which will also be equipped with 14 V-136-4.5 MW, are scheduled to be connected to the grid in the fourth quarter of next year. The wind turbine manufacturer did not disclose the clients for the large order.

Renewable Energy Fair in Italy: “We are facing an enormous development opportunity”

Italy reads the fair – Environment Minister appeals for trust

Vestas has already announced orders for wind farm construction in Italy with grid connections in 2026 several times this year: As early as December 31, the turbine manufacturer, which has long dominated the global market, announced the order of three V-150s with 6 MW each and two V-117s with 4.2 MW each, a total of 26 MW, for the contracting company Alerion San Marco, whose Valico Casone Cocca wind farm is scheduled to go online in the first quarter of 2026. At the end of March, Vestas also placed an order for V136-4.5 MW for the 50 MW Ascoli Satriano and Sant'Agata project of the leading Italian energy supplier Edison from Milan, which is scheduled to go online in the first half of 2026.

This was also preceded by orders in 2024 for the construction of two Vestas wind farms in the coming year 2026 with seven V-162-6.4 MW in one and three V-162-6.2 MW plus two V-150-5.4 MW in the other wind farm.

The growing interest in the Italian market is also reflected in the entry of new players such as the British wind farm operator SSE Renewables. In November 2024, the wind power specialist announced its entry into Italian wind farm construction for its 17.3 MW Castel Favorito and Masseria la Cattiva project. The wind farm is also scheduled to be built by 2026 using Siemens Gamesa SG 3.4-132 turbines.
