New nuclear power plant in Switzerland possible by 2050 at the earliest

New nuclear power plant in Switzerland possible by 2050 at the earliest

If the ban on new nuclear power plants were lifted, a new nuclear power plant in Switzerland would not be online until 2050 at the earliest. This is the conclusion reached by experts from the Swiss Academies of Arts and Sciences in a new report. Without significant government support, such a new construction would be unrealistic, the researchers write in the report published on Tuesday.

The advantages of nuclear power—low-CO2, weather-independent electricity—are offset by risks, political hurdles, and billions of dollars in investments. However, the revenues are unclear in a largely liberalized electricity market that will be dominated by renewable energies in the future, especially in summer.

According to the report, with an investment decision by mid-2035, only large Generation III/III+ reactors are realistic. These reactor types are already being built worldwide and, according to experts, are safer than existing power plants. Smaller reactors are under development, but they still need to prove their worth.
