Osnatech: Using weak roofs and facades with lightweight modules

When it comes to photovoltaics, many engineers, planners, and solar installers first think of glass modules. They are heavy and difficult to handle. Lightweight modules without glass allow installation on roofs that can only bear light loads.

With the development of lightweight and powerful modules, photovoltaics is now possible everywhere. In Germany alone, the area on industrial flat roofs, listed buildings, and sophisticated facades is estimated at around 1.2 billion square meters.

Less than five kilograms per square meterThe module area-to-power ratio is similar to that of glass modules, but lightweight modules are superior in terms of power per kilogram. A 420-watt module from Euronergy Europe, including the substructure, weighs less than five kilograms per square meter. Since the beginning of 2025, Euronergy has been expanding Osnatech's portfolio of lightweight solutions, complementing the lightweight modules from Sunman, which have already been on the market for five years.

Sunman marked the beginning of Osnatech's development and, at the same time, its path as a service provider for lightweight solar solutions. Euronergy is opening the next chapter in its success story. In addition to long-term product warranties, product safety and fire protection certificates are a top priority. Both Sunman and Euronergy comply with all relevant regulations.

If it doesn't work, it doesn't existBy the end of 2024, Osnatech will have covered approximately 120,000 square meters with lightweight modules, generating a total of 20 gigawatt hours of clean electricity. This has saved the operators more than 8,200 tons of CO2. "There's no such thing as can't be done," says Matthias Mittelviefhaus, Managing Director of Osnatech. In fact, the new modules can be used on almost any roof or facade.

Osnatech is the main distribution partner for Sunman in the DACH region and, since this year, the exclusive distribution partner for Euronergy. "With Euronergy, in addition to Sunman, we have additional high-quality solutions for projects with very specific technical and design requirements," explains Sales Director Stefan Pott. "They offer the option of obtaining modules in many colors and installing them on listed buildings."

Thanks to installation using special adhesives by experienced installers, a membrane roof can be transformed into a solar power plant in just three days. One such project was recently installed at the home of contractor Joseph Hubert in Fürth. After careful planning, 123 ultralight solar modules, including the substructure, were installed in 72 hours.
