To meet these requirements, this standard describes requirements for the planning, installation, and operation of smoke detectors and is aimed at specialist planners, architects, service providers, building developers, and owners. This standard is also intended to support smoke detector manufacturers, fire departments, fire protection authorities, and those involved in construction.

Installation takes place in residential buildings, apartments, and rooms with residential-like use. The signal can be provided by a single smoke detector or by several interconnected smoke detectors.

The monitored area includes, at a minimum, sleeping areas, especially children's rooms and bedrooms, as well as hallways and other rooms intended as escape routes from common areas. If this is a room that spans multiple floors, the detector must be installed on the top level.

To ensure a smoke alarm is designed in accordance with standards, it is important, among other things, that a smoke alarm connected to the mains supply has an additional power supply to ensure its functionality even in the event of a power failure. It is also important to ensure that people with impaired perception are informed in the event of an alarm via an additional, suitable warning device.

In addition to the rooms that require mandatory monitoring, there are also certain rooms where the installation of smoke detectors is recommended. These include kitchens, wet rooms, basements, attics, and stairwells. The performance characteristics and installation locations of the smoke detectors must be taken into account to avoid false alarms.

This set of rules also covers installation on different ceiling types and the corresponding distances from other devices and walls.
