Eight out of ten Europeans support the EU achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

Brussels, June 30 (EFE).- Eighty-six percent of European citizens consider climate change a serious problem, according to a Eurobarometer published Monday by the European Commission, which reveals that 81 percent of respondents support the EU achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

Investing in renewable energy is one of the solutions supported by 88% of all EU citizens, according to data revealed by Eurobarometer.

Also, 83% of Europeans believe that better EU preparedness for adverse weather events would improve their lives, while 85% agree that European companies should receive more support to compete in the global market for clean technologies, products, and services.

Disinformation

The survey also includes a section on the media, where data indicates that 52% of Europeans believe that traditional media do not provide clear information about climate change, its causes, and consequences, compared to 45% in both the EU and Spain who believe they do.

Likewise, regarding social media, 49% of Europeans say it is "difficult" to differentiate between reliable information and misinformation on digital platforms.

The Eurobarometer is released on the eve of the European Commission's presentation this Wednesday of its proposal for reducing CO2 emissions by 2040, as an intermediate step toward ensuring that by mid-century the European Union will not release more carbon dioxide than it can absorb within its territory.

Brussels, which a year ago recommended reducing emissions by at least 90% by the end of the next decade, has since been postponing the presentation of that target, which was initially scheduled for the first quarter of the year.

The EU executive is expected to propose a lower level of ambition than that recommended by the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change, which advocates a 95% reduction by 2040 and includes flexibilities that will help achieve that goal. EFE
