The Ourense Massif Central and Pena Trevinca, Sustainable Planet's environmental personality of the week

Madrid (EFEverde).- This week, a natural area, the Ourense Central Massif and Pena Trevinca, is our EFEverde Sustainable Planet environmental character of the week . The Ourense Central Massif and Pena Trevinca, mountain paradises that the Xunta (regional government) once wanted to convert into a natural park to enhance their value and which are almost entirely part of the EU's Natura 2000 Network, have been reduced to ashes, especially at their highest levels, due to a fire that devoured them, taking advantage of their abandonment and which is forcing us to look for alternatives to ensure their future. The environmental cartoonIn this edition, Sustainable Planet includes a cartoon by Víctor Solís, entitled "The New Horsemen of the Apocalypse," which reflects with humor and criticism on three new environmental additions to the horsemen of the apocalypse.
Mundo May and Viva la bagatellePedro Pablo G. May, in “Recycling for Nirvana” , reflects on the importance of closing material cycles and reducing waste in everyday life, while Juan López Ric (#Lopez), in “While I can pay for the air conditioning…” , denounces the hypocrisy of those who prioritize comfort over climate and environmental action, showing how creativity and humor can be tools to raise awareness.
The good environmental newsThe newsletter's usual positive news highlights the return of the environmental film festival Another Way Film Festival this October with a week of documentary films focused on the climate crisis, biodiversity, and activism. The program seeks to inspire audiences and offer narratives of hope in a context marked by the environmental emergency.
Green Agenda: Citizen ActionAmong the events of interest, WWF is calling for a "great howl" for the Iberian wolf on September 20 in Madrid, an initiative to raise awareness about the conservation of this emblematic and endangered species. The event invites citizens to actively participate in the defense of wildlife and ecosystems.
Green opinion makersThe newsletter compiles reflections from renowned eco-influencers, leaders, and sustainability experts. Bertrand Piccard, president of the Solar Impulse Foundation, addresses energy efficiency as the key to European sovereignty and competitiveness. From the Southern Cone, María Fernanda Aguirre , executive director of the Chile Green Building Council, proposes smart cities with technology serving human well-being. Alexandra Farbiarz Mas analyzes the intersection between economy and ecology, while Inma Saranova , director of IbizaPreservation, addresses how to achieve zero waste in kitchens .
Climate crisis: alarming dataSustainable Planet highlights that extreme temperatures in the summer of 2025 caused 3,893 deaths in Spain and 24,404 in Europe , while emissions from 180 fossil fuel companies intensified 200 heat waves. The section underscores the urgency of more ambitious measures, including proposals from Verdes Equo for a strengthened climate pact and a basic income for the ecological transition.
The summer of 2025 has become the hottest on record in Spain, with economic losses of €43 billion across the European Union due to extreme events, reinforcing the need for effective climate policies and investment in resilience.
The biodiversity is amazingAmong the surprising facts, the newsletter reports that octopuses don't use all their tentacles interchangeably , but rather each one has a specific function. Furthermore, the decline of ants in Fiji shows signs of an "insect apocalypse," highlighting the fragility of ecosystems and the importance of conserving biological diversity.
European Union: challenges and opportunitiesAt the institutional level, the newsletter highlights that the EU has failed to reach an agreement on emissions reductions by 2040 , with the impasse in Berlin and Paris jeopardizing climate action ahead of the climate summit in Brazil. However, the European Investment Bank (EIB) is mobilizing €17.5 billion to support more than 350,000 SMEs in energy efficiency and competitiveness.
The newsletter also gathers European opinions on climate incentives, prioritizing policies that encourage action without resorting to new taxes.
