After Melissa passed, images of the damage caused by the most powerful hurricane in recent Caribbean history emerged.
With gusts exceeding 200 kilometers per hour (km/h), Hurricane Melissa swept through Cuba, leaving at least 30 dead, according to authorities, on Wednesday, October 29. Ranked among the most powerful cyclones ever recorded in the Caribbean, it also caused significant damage in Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, where deadly flooding was reported.
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel reported "considerable damage" in the west of the country, where thousands of homes were destroyed and infrastructure severely affected. After crossing Jamaica with winds reaching 300 km/h, the hurricane is continuing its path toward the Bahamas, where a state of maximum alert has been declared.
