At the Nice summit, a new impetus for the ocean which must now be transformed into action

"At a time when multilateralism is being undermined in UN forums and science is being denied by a number of major states, we wanted in Nice […] to take the gamble of transformative change," declared the French ambassador for the poles and oceans, Olivier Poivre d'Arvor, at the closing of the United Nations Ocean Summit (UNOC) this Friday, June 13. Since Monday, 64 heads of state and 174 delegations have gathered on the Côte d'Azur to focus on the protection of marine ecosystems and the resilience of the populations who depend on them.
This big gathering ended with the signing of a Nice Declaration without any quantified objectives, "discussed quite harshly, in a tense context at the United Nations" ahead of the UNOC, the French ambassador specified.
