Mulhouse Zoo. Espace Horizon Afrique: the macabre alliance of the emerald wasp and the cockroach

The pretty tropical wasp, visible since this summer in a terrarium at Mulhouse Zoo, hides a terrible reproductive secret. To lay its eggs, it needs an American cockroach, which it paralyzes in order to lay its egg. Once hatched, it will feed on a leg, then on the organs of the insect, which is still alive.
Emerald wasps are native to Africa, South America, and Australia. The Mulhouse Zoological and Botanical Park has been exhibiting around ten of them since the Horizon Afrique space opened on August 1st , brought from Chester Zoo in England.
