The day after their festive inauguration , the three Parisian bathing sites in the Seine remained closed on Sunday due to the rains affecting the capital, Paris City Hall announced on its website.

Due to the weather conditions, the red flag was raised Sunday morning at the entrance to three open-water swimming pools in Paris, prohibiting swimmers from accessing the pools. The Bras Marie (4th arrondissement, center), Grenelle (15th, west), and Bercy (12th, east) pools will remain closed until Monday, as will the Paris Plage pool located on the Bassin de la Villette (19th), until Monday inclusive, said Pierre Rabadan, deputy mayor for sports at Paris City Hall.

No inauguration for the Saint-Martin canal

Another site located on the Saint-Martin canal (10th) was due to welcome its first swimmers on Sunday, but it too had to remain closed "due to the level of rainfall recorded, which compromises the quality of the water", indicated the town hall of the X district, giving swimmers an appointment on Wednesday at 12 p.m.

In Paris, rainwater and wastewater mix in a single network; the only solution in the event of heavy rainfall is to discharge the overflow into the Seine.

As on the beaches, a system of flags—green, yellow, and red—established at the entrances to the sites allows visitors to know the flow of the Seine and the quality of the water. "If the water is unfit for swimming, the area will be closed, probably the day after heavy rain," Pierre Rabadan warned before they opened to the public.

1.4 billion euros invested

Last summer, record rainfall during the Olympic Games often made the water unsuitable for athletes to swim in , particularly because of occasionally high levels of faecal bacteria (Escherichia coli and enterococci) after heavy rain.

Since 2016, the State and local authorities in the Ile-de-France region have invested around 1.4 billion euros to make the Seine and the Marne, its main tributary in the Ile-de-France region, swimmable, including by bringing wastewater collection into compliance.
