According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), food is the main route of exposure of the population to perennial pollutants. However, unlike drinking water, data on the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food is still largely lacking. A report published Thursday, June 19, by the association Générations futures fills this gap. It reveals near-widespread contamination of the food chain and inadequate regulations, which tolerate PFAS concentration levels in food that are far too high compared to the risk thresholds established by EFSA.

Other work, conducted by the Austrian association Global 2000 and the Pesticide Action Network Europe (PAN Europe), also indicates that this situation is only the visible part of the problem: the most widespread of the eternal pollutants, trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), is not monitored, despite strong suspicions of toxicity for reproduction, and its presence in everyday foods such as bread, pasta and breakfast cereals at sometimes spectacular levels.
