When lightning flashes in the sky , remember that static electricity builds up in the clouds. When the voltage reaches the ionization threshold, an electric arc is created between the electrified area of the cloud and the nearest point on the ground. In this case, the voltage is so high that the phenomenon only lasts a fraction of a second.
