When the mercury rises, a refreshing swim is just as good for humans as it is for dogs. But you still have to choose the right spot. Lakes, rivers, ponds: they're not all created equal, and some can even be dangerous, even deadly.

Veterinarian Bertrand Rouffiange, of the Vignes Clinic in Beaune, details two health threats: leptospirosis and cyanobacteria. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease transmitted through the urine of rodents such as rats or nutria, and is prevalent in stagnant water. Symptoms include intense fatigue, vomiting, yellowing of the mucous membranes, and even kidney or liver damage, and can be severe and lead to the death of the animal.
