South Korea: Country ravaged by unprecedented torrential rains
Torrential rains hit the western fringe of South Korea on Thursday, July 17. The country has never experienced such heavy hourly rainfall since records began in 1904, according to the national meteorological agency.
Three areas in South Chungcheong Province recorded record rainfall this week. The Seosan area, south of Seoul, was hit by rainfall reaching 114.9 millimeters per hour.
At least three people were killed and a thousand evacuated as a result of the incident. Scientists have found that such extreme weather events have become more frequent due to climate change.
