Strasbourg: Leak of vegetable hydraulic oil in the Remparts basin: firefighters intervene

Firefighters intervened on Tuesday, July 29, at the Remparts dock in Strasbourg to contain a 500-meter-long leak of vegetable hydraulic oil, likely caused by a crane. The intervention aimed to prevent the spread of the pollution, which was deemed purely visual and posed no threat to the environment.
Firefighters responded to a leak of vegetable hydraulic oil on Tuesday, July 29, in the Bassin des Remparts, near the Quai des Belges in Strasbourg, just after the Vauban Bridge.
Emergency services had to set up a "sausage"-type barrier and blotters over several hundred meters. This process allows "the iridescence to be contained and treated by spraying dispersant," explains Captain Bruno Henry, column leader at the Eurometropolis.
According to the Bas-Rhin fire department, the source of the pollution was a crane. "It's just visual pollution," the firefighter continued. It was a leak of biodegradable, vegetable-based hydraulic oil. "We intervened around 8:15 a.m. to clear up any doubts. It was visually impressive."
At the height of the operation, 22 firefighters and seven vehicles were mobilized, including specialized chemical risk resources and divers for security.
The autonomous port services then took over to treat and ensure that the oil stopped spreading.
