Villefranche: the Saône polluted by ten liters of hydrocarbons, an investigation opened

More than 10 liters of hydrocarbons were spilled into the Saône River this Thursday, June 12, in Villefranche. An investigation has been opened to determine the causes of this incident.
Significant pollution of the Saône River is finally under control. Late Thursday, June 12, firefighters, police, and the river brigade rushed to Villefranche-sur-Saône to investigate suspected river pollution after the discovery of an iridescent stain on the surface of the river, which was flowing toward the town's port.
Fortunately, the leak was quickly controlled. " The operation was very rapid and coordinated, which made it possible to contain this pollution ," Olivier Mandon, deputy in charge of Ecological Transition within the Caladoise municipality, told our colleagues at Le Progrès . There is no danger to flora or fauna.

According to information from Le Progrès , ten liters of hydrocarbons were deliberately dumped into the city's stormwater network before flowing into the Saône, at the level of rue Denis-Papin. " The urban services carried out surveys in order to trace the origin of the pollution," added the elected official . "Unfortunately, we have not found the source ."
An investigation has been entrusted to the Villefranche police station to uncover the circumstances surrounding this pollution. Those guilty of this offense of surface water pollution, severely punished by the Environmental Code, face two years in prison and a fine of up to €75,000.
