ANBI, the containment basin on the Trobbia torrent inaugurated in Milan

Inaugurated in Gessate , a municipality in the metropolitan area of Milan , the containment basin on the Trobbia torrent, in the presence of the national and regional leaders of ANBI . The basin was built by the Consorzio di bonifica Est Ticino Villoresi to counteract the hydraulic risk of an urbanized area that suffers frequent and significant flooding, in this way the effects of the phenomena are limited also on the entire city of Milan. The Lombardy Region has invested a total of 20 million euros to secure the area, with positive effects also on the city of Milan .
To underline the strategic importance of the intervention and the strong institutional commitment to hydraulic safety, the ribbon was cut by the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, accompanied by the Regional Councillor, Gianluca Comazzi .
“ This work consolidates a model of virtuous collaboration between the Region and the Land Reclamation and Irrigation Consortia, identified as the bodies implementing interventions, studies and monitoring for the mitigation of hydraulic risk with 118 projects, which will make the entire Lombardy region safe, thanks to overall funding of approximately 170 million euros ", Fontana highlights, " The works were carried out in record time, a symptom of a tested and functioning system ".
The basin , which represents one of the cornerstones of the Trobbie flood control system, has been operational since last March and has already been put into operation on several occasions, demonstrating its effectiveness in containing floods . As large as 7 football fields and with a capacity of over 126,000 cubic metres, the basin is made up of two sectors, which are activated progressively based on the intensity of the flow, which at the inlet can exceed 50 cubic metres per second (m3/s), while at the outlet it is limited to 13 m3/s, drastically reducing the risk of flooding in residential areas.
“ This is the third work of this type that we are inaugurating in a few weeks in Lombardy; we hope that what has been achieved here will be an example for the national plan for the hydraulic infrastructure of the territory, which we have been asking for a long time to counteract the consequences of the climate crisis ” comments the President of ANBI , Francesco Vincenzi .
The project now includes the start of the second phase: the renaturalization of the site with green areas and wetlands, as well as the creation of remote control systems for coordinated management of the flood basins. “ Built in just 548 days, the basin combines hydraulic functionality, sustainability, environmental enhancement and rural landscape ” concludes Alessandro Rota , President of the Est Ticino Villoresi Land Reclamation Consortium and ANBI Lombardia. The intervention is part of a broad program for the prevention of hydrogeological risk and which includes the creation of other flood basins in the municipalities of Gessate, Masate, Inzago, Bellinzago.
