Waste, RenOils: Used oil collection to grow 2.4% in 2024

Rome, November 5 (Adnkronos) – RenOils, a voluntary, non-profit national consortium that organizes the collection, treatment, and recovery of used vegetable and animal oils and fats, is presenting at the 2025 edition of Ecomondo. For the occasion, the 2024 results will be presented, confirming the consolidation of the recycling chain in the sector. In 2024, approximately 60,000 tons of used vegetable and animal oils and fats were collected, an increase of 1,148 tons compared to 2023.
The collection network is growing with over 63,600 collection points nationwide: data that demonstrates a system that continues to expand, both in terms of quantities recovered and territorial coverage.
Veneto remains the best-served region with 8,832 tons collected, followed by Lombardy with 8,536 tons, Emilia-Romagna with 6,210 tons, Campania with 6,144 tons, and Tuscany with 4,140 tons. These five regions together account for over 68% of the national collection. In 2024, the collection network reached 63,620 collection points across the country, an increase of 2,233 compared to 61,387 points in 2023 (+3.6%). Campania remains the region with the highest density of collection points (12,807), followed by Lombardy (8,461), Veneto (7,995), Lazio (7,289), and Emilia-Romagna (6,823).
To encourage citizen involvement, protocols have been activated in Lazio and Liguria regarding collection in small municipalities, and an agreement has also been signed with Amazon: starting January 1, 2026, the major online retailer will report the quantities of cooking oils sold on the platform and will pay the environmental contribution to RenOils on behalf of retailers.
"We are very pleased with these results," comments Ennio Fano, President of RenOils, "and with the resulting virtuous circle of circular economy: used oils continue to be used to produce biofuels, biodegradable lubricants, cosmetics, detergents, and other low-impact products. What's new is the growing interest in aviation for SAFs (Sustainable Aviation Fuels), which contain recycled used oils and reduce CO2 emissions from flights by up to 80% compared to traditional kerosene, without modifying engines. This is a rapidly expanding sector thanks to EU regulations requiring a progressive increase in the share of sustainable fuels. The oils that RenOils collects today can literally power the planes of tomorrow."
