Negative electricity prices are breaking records: how you can benefit from them

The energy market is rapidly evolving. In 2025, we'll see a striking trend: the number of hours with negative electricity prices will be higher than ever before. This may sound strange, but it actually presents opportunities for businesses and smart energy users.
What are negative electricity prices?
Negative electricity prices arise when more energy is generated than is currently being consumed. Supply, therefore, exceeds demand. This is especially common on sunny and windy days when a lot of renewable energy is being generated. It also occurs on days when electricity demand is low, such as weekends or holidays when many factories and offices are closed.
We currently don't have enough storage capacity (batteries) to store the excess energy at these times. Furthermore, flexibility on the production side is limited because power plants can't quickly switch back or forth. At such times, the electricity grid becomes overloaded, and producers pay to be able to offload their power.
How does this develop?
The numbers don't lie. The graph below shows how the number of hours with negative prices has developed:

In 2022, there were only 85 hours with negative prices. In 2023, that rose to 316 hours. Last year, we reached 458 hours, and in 2025, we'll already be approaching 500 hours, and the year isn't over yet.
What do we expect?
Experts expect this number to rise to 650 to 700 hours by the end of 2025. This means more and more opportunities for you to benefit from extremely low or even negative energy prices.
What can you do with this? Dynamic energy contracts!
Businesses and consumers with flexibility in consumption and/or storage can especially benefit from this. With a dynamic energy contract, you can make smart use of these price fluctuations and save significantly on your energy bill. At Holland Energie, we offer dynamic energy contracts that move with market prices. This way, you can make the most of negative electricity prices.
The benefits at a glance:
- Save smart: use energy when the price is low or even negative.
- Add money for consumption: shift your production, cooling or vehicle charging to times with negative prices.
- Maximize your return with solar panels and batteries: store your own electricity and avoid feeding it back into the grid when prices are negative.
