APA warns of risk of cliff collapses during summer

With the arrival of the 2025 bathing season, the Portuguese Environment Agency ( APA ) warns of the danger associated with the natural instability of cliffs, which affects half of the coastal strip of mainland Portugal.

These unpredictable geological phenomena, usually known as landslides or collapses, occur naturally and more frequently during winter and periods of greater rainfall.

However, they can also occur during the summer, during the bathing season, coinciding with the presence of bathers on the beaches.

To minimize the risk to beach users, the APA, in conjunction with the municipal Civil Protection services, carries out inspections before the start of the bathing season to prevent accidents with serious consequences.

These actions include the placement of informative signage, physical delimiting barriers and the definition of areas prohibited to circulation and occupation, as enshrined in the law.

Whenever rock blocks with strong signs of instability are identified, and if the logistical and operational conditions for their removal are met, controlled dismantling is carried out.

This operation involves the collaboration of the GNR Emergency Protection and Relief Unit (UEPS/GNR), volunteer firefighters, and municipal services of local authorities.

The APA urges beach users to maintain a safe distance from the cliffs and respect existing signage, contributing to a safe bathing season.
