Port of Porto Alegre resumes operations after a week of closure

Port complex resumes its activities with the recent reduction in the level of Lake Guaíba
The public port of Porto Alegre, in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, resumed operations on Thursday, July 3, Portos RS, the Port Authority, reported in a statement. The reopening occurred with the recent reduction in the level of Lake Guaíba and the reopening of the flood protection system floodgates by the Municipal Water and Sewage Department (DMAE).
According to Portos RS, the decision was made after a careful evaluation of the conditions of access to the port area and the operational environment, prioritizing the safety of people and also of cargo and the entire port infrastructure.
The Port of Porto Alegre suspended operations as a precaution on June 25 due to the rising level of Lake Guaíba.
The Port Authority reported that, during the period of temporary suspension of activities, it maintained a continuous plan to monitor water levels, through its environmental programs and in alignment with the guidelines of the local Civil Defense.
The stored cargo was duly mapped and the port operators maintained direct contact with the Port Authority to ensure a safe and organized resumption.

History
In 2024, during the flood that hit several regions of Rio Grande do Sul between the months of April and May, activities at the public port in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul were suspended.
The Porto Alegre complex halted operations from May 2nd due to the rising level of Lake Guaíba, which flooded the main streets and avenues of the capital, and also caused the closure of Salgado Filho International Airport.
Operations were resumed at the end of June, on a contingent basis, according to information provided by Portos RS.
