Biomethane production has started in Greece

Farma Chitas, a Greek company specializing in pig farming, meat processing, and renewable energy production, has successfully completed testing of a biogas upgrading unit at its facility in Filippiada and produced the first quantities of biomethane, containing over 97 per cent methane. According to DEPA, this marks the beginning of biomethane production in Greece.
After compression, the bio-CNG is transported to DEPA Emporia’s Fisikon stations for use as vehicle fuel, providing a clean and economical alternative for transportation.
DEPA Emporia, the commercial arm of Greece’s Public Gas Corporation, is responsible for natural gas supply, trading, and bio-CNG distribution. Its brand, Fisikon, offers compressed natural gas.
Biomethane will also be available to consumers in areas without access to the natural gas network or for injection into the existing gas grid. This development is a milestone for Greece’s energy sector, introducing a new renewable fuel source into the national energy mix.
“The operational readiness of the first compressed biomethane production unit in Greece is a significant step towards the energy transition and the adoption of sustainable practices,” said Konstantinos Xifaras, the CEO of DEPA Emporia. “During the project’s implementation, several challenges had to be overcome. However, the commitment and continuous support of all parties involved, along with the excellent cooperation with Farma Chitas and the valuable experience of the French company Prodeval, the supplier of the upgrading unit, contributed to its successful completion. Through this initiative, DEPA Emporia actively contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the promotion of the circular economy by utilizing organic waste for clean energy production.”

“This pilot unit is a crucial technological and operational project that allows us to explore the possibilities of producing and integrating biomethane into the Greek natural gas market,” said Dr Kyriaki Karakitsou, Director of Subsidiary Activities at DEPA. “This pioneering project paves the way for the development of a sustainable energy model, strengthens the energy independence of our country, and promotes the green transition.”
