Greece’s electricity exports hit a record high

Greece has significantly increased not only its gas exports but also its electricity exports, reaching a historic peak in the first half of 2025.
According to data from the transmission operator, IPTO, between January and June 2025, the export balance rose to 571 gigawatt-hours (GWh), up from just 22 GWh in 2024. Commercial export programmes for the same period also set new records.
IPTO aims to support Greece’s transition to becoming a net electricity exporter through developments, planning to invest 6 billion euros over ten years, including in the integration of green energy. In the first half of 2025, it connected 827 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy to the grid, bringing total connected capacity to over 16 GW.
Greece became a net electricity exporter in 2024, overturning a decades-long tradition of an import balance.
