L&T dispatches fourth steam generator for Kaiga Atomic Power Station

This is part of the 700 MWe Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor Fleet Programme, with L&T delivering all four SGs in 45 months.

In a significant boost to India's nuclear power generation goals, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Heavy Engineering has announced that it has dispatched the fourth steam generator (SG) for Kaiga Atomic Power Station in Karnataka. With this, L&T has delivered all the four SGs under the 700 megawatt electrical (MWe) Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor Fleet Programme.“Our large talent pool, trained in robust nuclear quality culture, ensures consistent first-time-right execution and globally benchmarked deliveries. This accomplishment is in alignment with the PM’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision of achieving at least 100 GWe nuclear power generation,” said Anil V Parab, whole-time director & senior executive vice president – Heavy Engineering and L&T Valves.According to the company's statement, L&T delivered all four SGs in 45 months, with the first delivered in a record 33 months. These steam generators are designated for Units 5 & 6 of the Kaiga Atomic Power Station.

Scaling up nuclear capacity

India currently has 8.18 gigawatts of electric (GWe) of installed nuclear power capacity with 24 operational reactors as of January 30, 2025. The government aims to significantly increase this capacity to 22.48 GWe by 2031-32.As part of the broader Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, the long-term goal is to achieve at least 100 GWe of nuclear power by 2047, which is projected to meet approximately 10 per cent of the nation's total energy requirements.
