Latvia’s largest wind turbine rises at Laflora Energy wind park

The first Nordex turbine was assembled at Latvenergo’s Laflora Energy wind park, which is the largest turbine in the country, featuring blades 87.5 meters long, the company reported. Latvenergo is a state-owned electric utility company in Latvia.
This is a milestone for the country; to put it in perspective, just three turbines from this new park can produce as much electricity as the traditional wind systems previously employed across Latvia. Meanwhile, blade deliveries for the remaining turbines are ongoing, transported from Ventspils Port to the Laflora Energy wind park in the Jelgava region.
Turbine components are being lifted with some of the world’s tallest cranes. The installed Nordex turbines feature a 179-meter tower height and 87.5-meter blades, reaching 266.5 meters at peak operation. Just three turbines can cover about 5 per cent of Latvia’s energy needs. Nighttime blade transport ensures safety, with 48 blades for 16 turbines being moved to the Laflora Energy wind park.
Initial turbines are set to generate electricity by next April, with the entire park entering test mode by June with a total capacity of 108.8 megawatts. The wind park is developed in the reclaimed peat extraction fields in the Jelgava region.
