Ørsted's Hornsea 4 may get help from UK authorities
Wednesday, Ørsted announced in connection with its Q1 report that the utility will abandon development of the Hornsea 4 offshore wind farm in “its current form” because it is simply no longer a viable investment.
However, British authorities still want the project completed, and perhaps a helping hand is on the way for the Danish developer, reports Danish business media Finans.
“We recognize the impact that high global inflation and supply chain constraints are having on industry across Europe, and we will work with Ørsted to get Hornsea 4 back on track,” Finans cites a a spokesperson from the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero saying.
As recently as September 2025, Hornsea 4, which was planned to have a capacity of 2.5GW, was awarded British government funding.
The decision to halt the development of Hornsea 4 is due to a combination of increased supply chain costs, higher interest rates, and increased execution risk, which means that the expected “value creation” is no longer sufficient.
