PNGRB urges shift to electric motor-driven compressors across 25,429-km gas pipeline network

The move is aimed at reducing carbon dioxide and other pollutant emissions from the natural gas sector. The advisory was issued on the occasion of World Environment Day.

The Board has recommended that the electricity for electric motor-driven compressors be procured from renewable energy sources. According to the PNGRB, the current regulations permit the use of gas-based compressors and classify the gas consumed by them as System Use Gas under the tariff determination framework.
In its official communication, PNGRB said, “This advisory encourages entities to adopt electric motor-driven compressors as part of their new and existing pipeline infrastructure to reduce emissions.”The regulator stated that this shift in compression technology aligns with India's broader climate goals and the push towards integrating renewable energy into industrial operations. Pipeline operators have been advised to evaluate feasibility, update their systems accordingly, and incorporate renewable energy-based solutions. The PNGRB's advisory forms part of its larger strategy to ensure sustainable and efficient operation of the natural gas infrastructure while meeting India’s environmental commitments.
