SSE starts building Strathy South wind farm

SSE has started building its 208MW Strathy South Wind Farm in the Scottish Highlands—a key project supporting the UK’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan.

Located in Sutherland beside the operational Strathy North site, the £400m onshore wind farm will have 35 turbines and power around 200,000 homes annually, when fully operational in 2027.

The project is fully contracted through a 15-year CfD (Contract for Difference) from the UK Government’s AR5 round.

It’s a flagship development under SSE’s Net Zero Acceleration Programme Plus, which is investing in homegrown renewables to secure the nation’s energy future.

Stephen Wheeler, Managing Director of SSE Renewables, said: “The construction of our 208MW Strathy South Wind Farm puts SSE’s commitment to support the UK as its clean energy champion into action.”

UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks welcomed the move, noting: “Delivering more onshore wind across the country is at the heart of our mission to becoming a clean energy superpower.”

Construction will support up to 125 full-time jobs at peak and is being led by Scottish contractor RJ McLeod.

The project was first proposed in 2007. It has since undergone extensive revisions to minimise environmental impacts, notably on peatlands and birdlife, before receiving final planning consent in 2021.
