The North Macedonian energy sector takes a big step towards the EU

The North Macedonian Parliamentary Committee on European Affairs has adopted the new draft Energy Law in its first reading, initiating the process of aligning Macedonian legislation with European energy regulations.

As Deputy Minister Miroslav Labudović highlighted, the transposition of the directives of the European Clean Energy Package will bring several key benefits:

  • A more transparent and competitive electricity market, leading to greater choice, better service quality, and fairer prices for consumers
  • The possibility to change suppliers without administrative or financial barriers
  • The introduction of smart meters and enhanced consumer information
  • Support for new concepts such as consumer-producers, energy communities and active demand management

This process is part of the country’s broader reform agenda, which includes strengthening institutions, ensuring energy security, promoting green transition, advancing social justice, and preparing for EU membership.

“This is a comprehensive law, fully aligned with European standards,” said Minister of Energy Sanja Božinovska. “The transposition of the Fourth Energy Package brings multiple benefits. For the economy, this means greater market competitiveness, lower electricity prices through increased market liquidity, and access to new sources of supply. For citizens, it means enhanced consumer protection, more flexible tariff models, and greater market transparency. Additionally, it creates room for more investment in energy storage capacities, which is crucial for system stability given the growth of renewable energy sources.”

The law is fully aligned with the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans and the European Green Deal. With its adoption, North Macedonia will join the European and day-ahead electricity markets. It is estimated that successful implementation could yield financial benefits of 6.4 to 8.5 million euros.

In particular, the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Mineral Resources emphasises the importance of bringing MEPSO under its direct authority to more efficiently and professionally manage key electricity transmission infrastructure.

A new electricity law is also taking shape in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
