New Delhi: India added only 4,530 MW of new thermal power capacity in 2024-25 against a target of 15,360 MW, reflecting a 70 per cent shortfall, according to the latest quarterly report released by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).Out of 22 targeted thermal units, only six were commissioned during the year. These included four units in the state sector and two in the central sector. The units commissioned were Yadadri TPS (800 MW), Bhusawal TPS (660 MW), Panki TPS (660 MW), and Jawaharpur STPP (660 MW) in the state sector, and Khurja SCTPP (660 MW) and Ghatampur TPP (660 MW) in the central sector. The remaining 16 units, totaling 10,830 MW, slipped to FY26. These include Buxar TPP Units 1 and 2, Barh STPP Unit 3, North Karanpura STPP Unit 3, Patratu STPP Unit 1, and Khurja SCTPP Unit 2, among others.“Out of the 22 units totaling 15,360 MW targeted for commissioning in FY25, only six units aggregating 4,530 MW have been commissioned up to 31.03.2025,” the report said.In comparison, thermal capacity addition stood at 5,404 MW in FY24 and 6,765 MW in FY20.At the end of FY25, a total of 46 thermal units with cumulative capacity of 34,560 MW remained under construction. This includes 25 units (18,740 MW) in the central sector, 15 units (11,020 MW) in the state sector, and six units (4,800 MW) in the private sector. The report also shows continued delays in project commissioning. For example, Barh STPP Unit 3 by NTPC, originally targeted for April 2024, has now been postponed to FY26. Similarly, Ghatampur TPP Units 2 and 3 and Buxar TPP Units 1 and 2 have been deferred by several months.
