Trump says tariff letter is en route to EU within days
US President Donald Trump is “probably two days” away from sending the EU a letter with tariffs on exports to the US, Trump said during a government meeting Tuesday evening CEST, reports Reuters.
Late Monday CEST, Trump decided to postpone a deadline for announced new and higher tariffs on goods from the EU and several other countries, which were to take effect on Wednesday.
At the same time, he stated that the deadline for tariff negotiations with the US is now Aug. 1.
”There has been no change to this date, and there will be no change. In other words, all money must and will be paid from Aug. 1, 2025 – no extensions will be granted,” he wrote in a post on Truth Social.
It was in early April that the president announced tariffs on imports of goods from several countries. He dubbed the day “Liberation Day.”
On the same day that the tariffs came into effect, the US president chose to suspend several of them for 90 days, during which a lower base tariff of 10% would apply to most countries. This is the pause that was set to expire on Wednesday.
At the same time as the deadline was postponed, the US government announced that it had sent letters with new tariffs to 14 countries.
Among these are Japan and South Korea, which will be subject to new tariffs of 25% from Aug. 1.
On Monday, Reuters reported, citing unnamed EU sources, that the EU would not receive a letter. But that may still happen in a few days.
Negotiations are currently underway between the EU Commission and the Trump administration to avoid a tariff war.
On Tuesday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said a trade war and tariffs would be a burden for Europe, European companies and citizens, but also for the US and its population.
So “we must do everything we can to avoid it,” she said.
“The negotiations are at a critical stage right now because the deadline is just around the corner, so I have nothing more to add,” said Frederiksen at a press conference in the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The EU has prepared a response to the US tariffs, which could come into force if the negotiations are unsuccessful.
On Tuesday evening, the US president also said that he would impose a 50% tariff on copper. This caused US copper prices to fall 13% on Tuesday evening, setting a new record.
