Eco Stor: Construction begins on large-scale storage facility with 300 megawatts without government funding

Eco Stor: Construction begins on large-scale storage facility with 300 megawatts without government funding

The subsidiary Eco Power Three is constructing the large-scale energy storage facility. The project is being financed entirely privately. Investors NIC and X-Elio are providing the funds. No public subsidies are being used. The municipality of Staßfurt benefits from business tax revenues, 90 percent of which remain within the local community. According to Eco Power Three, they played a key role in securing the corresponding amendment to the law.

Added value from green electricity generation for municipalities

The plant consists of three blocks, each with its own independent infrastructure. This modular design allows for phased commissioning and is intended to make construction and operation more efficient. Preparatory construction work began in July 2025. The first work on the actual storage facility is now underway. In the future, the storage facility will be able to supply around half a million households with electricity for two hours.

The battery storage system is charged during periods of high renewable energy feed-in and discharged during periods of low production. This allows for optimal use of solar and wind power and helps maintain grid stability. "The energy storage facility in Förderstedt exemplifies the dynamism of the entire industry – without subsidies or grants – and simultaneously generates new added value from green electricity production locally, within the respective communities," emphasizes Urban Windelen, Managing Director of the German Energy Storage Association (BVES).

Innovation and network practice go hand in hand

50Hertz CEO Stefan Kapferer emphasizes the project's importance for the electricity grid: "For us as a transmission system operator, high-performance large-scale storage facilities at grid-serving locations are a crucial component for maintaining a stable and flexible electricity grid." The successful collaboration with Eco Stor in Förderstedt demonstrates how technological innovation and grid practice can go hand in hand. "Such storage facilities can significantly contribute to balancing the fluctuating feed-in from renewable energy sources and are therefore central to a secure, modern energy system in eastern Germany and beyond."
