Securing skilled workers in building technology

The heat pump is considered a key technology in the energy transition in the building sector. However, this boom also brings with it challenges – especially in terms of technical expertise. Anyone who wants to successfully plan, install, or consult for long-term success cannot avoid targeted training.

Further training strengthens competence in heat pump planning

The switch to renewable heating systems is leading to a significant increase in demand for heat pumps. At the same time, the need for skilled workers familiar with the technical, planning, and legal requirements is growing. In-depth training is therefore a prerequisite for successful implementation.

Heat pumps are based on thermodynamic processes, the efficient use of which requires in-depth knowledge of physics, control engineering, and system integration. The range of system variants—such as air-to-water, brine, or water-to-water heat pumps—presents different challenges for planners and installers. In addition, the integration into existing heating systems or building automation often goes beyond the traditional expertise of the HVAC sector.

In addition to technology, the regulatory environment is also playing an increasingly important role. Regulations such as the Building Energy Act (GEG) or funding programs such as the Federal Funding for Efficient Buildings (BEG) require up-to-date knowledge. Errors in planning or consulting can pose economic and legal risks. Certified training courses, for example, according to VDI 4645 Part 1 (Category PE), provide security in this regard.

Informed customer advice at eye level

New skills are also required in customer interactions: Many end customers already have prior knowledge and expect concrete information on efficiency, environmental impact, and cost-effectiveness. In addition to technical know-how, communication skills are also required – aspects that modern training programs also address.

Practical training is increasingly available in the specialist wholesale trade. Providers such as Fega & Schmitt offer their own programs, for example, via their proprietary "Prokademie" platform. The spectrum ranges from product training to standard-compliant planning and commissioning. The goal is to provide targeted support to specialist companies and planners in their familiar working environment.

The heat pump is not a simple plug-and-play solution. Its full potential can only be realized when planning, implementation, and operation are precisely coordinated. "Professional training lays the foundation for this: as a strategic investment in quality, customer satisfaction, and long-term market success," say Bernd Eberlein and Frank Leyser , Managing Directors at Fega and Schmitt.
