Iberdrola builds first solar park in Germany – and supplies Vodafone mobile network

The Spanish energy provider Iberdrola has commissioned its first solar park in Germany in Boldekow (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania). The facility comprises approximately 80,000 solar panels covering an area the size of more than 65 football fields. It is expected to generate up to 53 gigawatt hours annually.
Boldekow: Millions flow into municipal coffersThe project's unique feature is the direct supply of electricity to Vodafone Germany. Through a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), all of the generated energy will be fed into the nationwide mobile network. Vodafone claims this will enable it to cover the electricity needs of approximately 3,000 mobile base stations. The municipality of Boldekow will also benefit: millions of euros in property tax revenue are expected to flow into the municipal coffers over the coming decades.
Solar Investors Guide: Large-scale storage systems on the power grid
According to Vodafone Germany CEO Marcel de Groot, the project is part of the strategy to make grid operations more sustainable: "The 80,000 solar panels that Iberdrola is now launching in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will transmit exclusively for our grid and can thus ensure the operation of more than 3,000 stations across the country." Over its planned 30-year operating life, the solar park is expected to save approximately 20,000 tons of CO₂ annually. The plant was implemented in collaboration with partner companies such as Solarpro, Sungrow, P&Q, and 4Energy.
Iberdrola: Solar power and offshore windFor Iberdrola, the project marks its entry into the German photovoltaic market. Until now, the company's activities in Germany have primarily involved offshore wind farms such as Wikinger, Baltic Eagle, and Windanker in the Baltic Sea. "Photovoltaics is another building block in expanding our renewable energy offering in Germany," explains Felipe Montero, Managing Director of Iberdrola Germany. (nhp)
