Employee uniforms for making sustainable blankets

McDonald's Spain announces the launch of a blanket made from recycled employee uniforms, a move that reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and the circular economy. This initiative allows MyMcDonald's app users to purchase the blanket by redeeming points accumulated in the loyalty program.
Using Jacquard looms, recycled uniforms undergo a process that transforms their colors and textures to become high-quality blankets, giving them a second life. This process begins with a meticulous recycling process for disused uniforms. First, the garments are sorted by type and color, greatly facilitating the subsequent stages. Once this is done, non-recoverable elements, such as zippers and buttons, are removed to obtain a clean fabric that can be efficiently recycled. Once the fabric is prepared, it undergoes sectional cutting and a shredding process, resulting in recycled fiber suitable for reuse.
From this fiber, the spinning and weaving process begins, ensuring the quality and durability of the final product with an optimal finish. Finally, the pattern is made, cut, and sewn into the blanket, which is packaged and ready for distribution.
For a limited time, loyal customers can get one and contribute to promoting the circular economy. The addition of this sustainable blanket to the MyMcDonald's rewards catalog encourages active user participation in the program and, in turn, promotes environmental awareness, bringing the company's commitment to consumers' homes.
A firm commitment to the environment
The creation of a blanket with recycled threads aligns with the brand's values and Happy Change strategy. The initiative is another step in promoting the circular economy and reducing waste, a fundamental pillar of the strategy. This initiative joins other notable company initiatives, such as the elimination of more than 800 tons of plastic since 2019, given that 90% of its packaging comes from renewable sources. Furthermore, McDonald's Spain aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 as part of its commitment to environmental protection.
In addition, Happy Change also focuses on other essential pillars for a comprehensive understanding of sustainability. These include the implementation of energy efficiency measures, enabling more than 95% of restaurants to operate with renewable energy, and the promotion of electric mobility, with more than 150 restaurants equipped with electric vehicle chargers.
For more information on how to purchase the sustainable blanket and other available rewards, users can visit the MyMcDonald's app, available for iOS and Android devices.
