Ethiopia announces its bid to host the UN climate summit in 2027

Addis Ababa, Sep 8 (EFE) - Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced his country's bid to host the 2027 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32) on Monday, as part of Africa's efforts to strengthen its leadership in the fight against the climate crisis.
"We are the first African generation with the means to repair what was broken, and the last with the time to do so. That's why Ethiopia is proud to present its bid to host COP32 in 2027," Abiy said during the opening of the second Africa Climate Summit (ACS) in Addis Ababa.
"We invite the world to the African capital of climate ambition diplomacy to witness our solutions and help shape the future. Let us show the world that the continent of origins will also be the continent of solutions," he added.
The summit will bring together African and international political and civil society leaders and representatives until the 10th under the theme "Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing Africa's Resilient and Green Development."
The meeting seeks specifically to build African consensus ahead of global forums such as the upcoming COP30, to be held in November in the Brazilian city of Belém; but also the G20 leaders' summit scheduled for the same month in Johannesburg, under the South African presidency of the bloc; and the UN General Assembly, which begins this Tuesday in New York.
Among the ACS's main objectives is to increase favorable financing for climate adaptation and mitigation in Africa, which contributes less than 4% of global greenhouse gas emissions but is one of the continents hardest hit by extreme weather events such as droughts and torrential rains, which cause thousands of deaths each year.
