New generations against food waste

New generations against food waste

According to WWF data, 40% of global food production is wasted. This amounts to more than 2.5 billion tons of food wasted each year. Raising awareness among everyone to take action is key, including the younger generations who will lead the change of tomorrow. Therefore, Too Good To Go, the world's largest app for combating food waste, is launching Next Gen in Spain, an educational initiative aimed at children between 6 and 11 years old to learn about food waste, its relationship with climate change, and how to prevent it in an educational and fun way.

Called Too Good To Go Next Gen, this free educational program, presented in a free, downloadable workbook format, is designed to help parents, teachers, and guardians address the issue of food waste with younger generations through fun, hands-on games and activities.

"With more than 450 million food packages saved worldwide and more than 28 million in Spain alone, at Too Good To Go we believe that inspiring and empowering new generations is essential to building a future where wasting food is not an option," says Marie Lindström, General Manager of Too Good To Go in Spain. She adds, "It's often the little ones who drive change at home and motivate adults to take action. That's why it's so important to teach them from such an early age about food waste and how to combat it. With initiatives like Too Good To Go Next Gen, we want to inspire new generations to continue generating a positive impact and continue moving towards a world without food waste."

Available through the new 'Educational Space' on the Too Good To Go website, Next Gen features two illustrated notebooks with fun, practical, and educational content to help little ones understand, through play, what food waste is and how to react:

The first notebook is titled 'What is Food Waste?' and through various activities such as 'The Banana Journey,' children learn what food waste is, how it occurs, and why it's important to prevent it in order to protect the planet.

In the second booklet, 'How to Avoid Food Waste?', children are helped through various games to explore different ways to avoid food waste in their daily lives in a simple and fun way, from how to best preserve or store food to anti-waste cooking recipes.

Both resources are available for free download and are designed for parents to use at home, as well as for teachers to use in the classroom with students or as part of various extracurricular activities.

The Too Good To Go Next Gen initiative builds on the success of other educational programs launched by the company in other countries, such as Mon École Anti-Gaspi in France, which reached more than 4,000 schools, and similar initiatives in Denmark. Now, this program is being launched internationally as one of the key elements of Too Good To Go's new "Educational Space," a digital platform designed for anyone interested in learning more about food waste. In addition to Next Gen, the "Educational Space" includes other initiatives:

'Look, Smell, Taste', which aims to resolve the perennial confusion surrounding the meaning of the best-before date and encourages people to use their senses when the date has passed—that is, look, smell, and taste—to check if the food is still fit for consumption, thereby reducing food waste in the home. The initiative primarily consists of the 'Look, Smell, Taste' label, which is already being added to the packaging of more than 1,500 widely consumed food products in Spain, such as Bimbo, Danone, and Central Lechera Asturiana, among others, to remind consumers to look, smell, and taste before throwing away.

Business Leaders of Tomorrow, a platform featuring case studies developed in collaboration with INSEAD and Copenhagen Business School, inspires students and future leaders to build purpose-driven businesses that integrate sustainability into their DNA and strategy.

All of these initiatives seek to empower people of all ages to take meaningful action and work together to build a more sustainable present and future.
