SIGRE celebrates medicine recycling in Europe

Madrid, May 9 (EFEverde).- On Europe Day (May 9), SIGRE is advocating for the need to recycle expired or no longer needed medicines, an activity that the European Union considers necessary.
May 9th is Europe Day, an event marked by the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, which proposed the creation of the ECSC (European Coal and Steel Community) and promoted economic collaboration between different Member States. It has been key to addressing environmental problems such as climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, according to SIGRE.
To raise awareness about medicine recycling, the #medsdisposal campaign has been launched, providing information on medicine disposal systems in Europe.
For its part, the European Union emphasizes the need to properly recycle medicines to prevent environmental consequences such as ecosystem pollution. It also highlights the impact of recycling on eliminating the health risks associated with expired or leftover medicines.
How to recycle in Spain? For more than 20 years, SIGRE has been the system that allows all citizens to dispose of unnecessary medications through the SIGRE Point, which can be found in pharmacies. This allows the habit of recycling medication waste and its packaging to reach every home.
This is what SIGRE's general manager, Miguel Vega, says: "SIGRE's work is possible thanks to citizen collaboration and the joint efforts of pharmaceutical companies, drug distributors, and pharmacies. This May 9th, Europe Day, reminds us how health and environmental care unite us across borders."
Since the beginning of 2025, the management entity has expanded its scope to include commercial and industrial pharmaceutical packaging, reaffirming the pharmaceutical sector's commitment to sustainability and the circular economy, according to the non-profit organization. EFEverde
