Spain has recorded 13% more rainfall than usual so far this hydrological year.

Madrid, July 4 (EFE).- The average value of accumulated rainfall so far this hydrological year (from October 1, 2024, to July 1, 2025) amounts to 624 liters per square meter, which is 13 percent more than the normal value for this period, which is 554 liters per square meter.

This excess rainfall has been recorded across much of the peninsula, with "particularly significant accumulations" in Murcia, the Valencian Community, the western half of Andalusia, the area surrounding the Central System, and the western half of Castilla-La Mancha, according to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

On the other hand, rainfall has been lower than usual in a stretch of the Cantabrian coast, which includes southern Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, and the western half of the Basque Country, as well as in the southeastern part of the peninsula, except in Murcia, where rainfall was higher than average.

In both archipelagos, accumulated rainfall has also been below normal (according to the 1991-2020 reference period), except in northern Mallorca, La Palma, and La Gomera.

Scattered showers at the end of June

During the week of June 25 to July 1, rainfall was scattered and mainly affected the northern third and inland areas of the peninsula, while it was very sparse in the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands.

Rainfall exceeded 10 liters per square meter in parts of Galicia, Asturias, the western half of Catalonia, as well as in isolated areas of the Central System, the Iberian System, the province of Cuenca, and some parts of northern Andalusia. The most significant amounts were recorded in Lleida and A Coruña, with peaks of up to 30 liters per square meter.

In the main observatories, the following stand out: 29 liters in Jaén, 15 liters in Ávila, 13 liters in Burgos/Villafría, 12 liters in Teruel, 9 liters in Gijón/Musel, and 8 liters in Cáceres.

In addition, on the 2nd, rainfall was recorded, mainly in the form of thunderstorms, in the interior and north of the peninsula.
