A magnitude 6.3 earthquake shakes Afghanistan, with tremors felt as far away as Kabul.

At the end of August, another earthquake, this one of magnitude 6, struck the eastern provinces of Kunar, Laghman, and Nangarhar. More than 2,200 people were killed in this earthquake, the deadliest in Afghanistan's recent history.
The country is frequently struck by earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range, near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates. Since 1900, the northeast of the country has experienced 12 earthquakes with a magnitude greater than 7, according to Brian Baptie, a seismologist with the British Geological Survey.
