Alsace. Eternal pollutants: tap water banned for vulnerable people in 11 municipalities around EuroAirport

The prefect of Haut-Rhin, Thierry Queffélec, has issued a decree banning the consumption of tap water by people deemed "sensitive" in 11 municipalities in southern Alsace, near Basel-Muhlouse airport, where the levels of Pfas (eternal pollutants) exceed the regulatory limit.
The presence of Pfas-type perennial pollutants in several catchment wells supplying drinking water to 11 municipalities in the Saint-Louis metropolitan area (SLA), as confirmed by analyses carried out in 2023 and regular monitoring of the situation, has led the Haut-Rhin prefect to take measures to restrict the use of tap water.
