A fire broke out this Saturday morning in southern Croatia near Split, the country's second city, forcing the evacuation of residents and tourists from several coastal villages.

The fire, which started in the Pisak and Marusic area, some 40 km from Split, spread quickly and "could not be controlled," the volunteer fire department said.

"Very serious"

"The situation is very serious. We have mobilized state forces and the police," Slavko Tucakovic, commander-in-chief of the fire service, told the national news agency HINA. Two water bomber planes have been sent as reinforcements.

According to Split-Dalmatia County Deputy Prefect Stipe Cogelja, a dozen houses were burned to the ground. Deputy Split-Dalmatia Police Chief Sinisa Mihanovic said at a press conference that police were "intensively investigating a crime of arson."

The fire spread to both sides of the regional road on the Adriatic coast, leading to the closure of part of the route. Croatian public broadcaster HRT reported that over the past two days, fires had raged in 17 locations in the Makarska and Omis areas on Croatia's southern Adriatic coast.
