Toul. The Bird Protection League establishes itself in Toul: a new boost for local biodiversity

Jaouen Verley, you recently launched, with Charlotte Skrzynski, the local LPO (League for the Protection of Birds) group in Toul. What is its objective?
"This group was created to strengthen the organization of the LPO at the departmental level. With Jean-Yves Moitrot (Editor's note: President of the LPO Meurthe-et-Moselle, Meuse, Vosges), we noted a weak presence of the association in the Toul area and the south of Pont-à-Mousson, leading to a lack of regular monitoring of local biodiversity. The objective is therefore to implement concrete actions in this territory: species monitoring, ecological monitoring, counts, etc."
A first meeting is scheduled for July 15 in Toul. What will happen there?
"This meeting, at the Auction Hall, will provide an opportunity to present the local group's operations and possible actions in the area. We will focus on monitoring local species, and will conclude the evening with a presentation on the red-backed shrike."

What are the next steps?
" We will be holding monthly meetings, every third Tuesday of the month, at the same location. They will be used to review LPO news, discuss current initiatives, and discover species related to the seasons."
How many participants do you expect for this first meeting?
"We're hoping for around 40 people. To date, around 500 people have already been informed via our social media."
Which species are your main focus in the sector?
"We often talk about the Montagu's harrier and the red kite. These species are rarely monitored in our area. The idea is to bring together observers, members, and volunteers to begin collecting data and gain a better understanding of their situation."
What is your reaction to the Duplomb law, which facilitates the use of pesticides in agriculture?
"This law has obvious harmful effects on health, the environment, animals... We firmly oppose this measure."
What simple actions can we take to help birds on a daily basis?
" It's important to avoid feeding them inappropriately. However, installing nest boxes is very beneficial. The LPO can provide the materials and offers workshops to learn how to make them. Participating in the garden bird count via the dedicated LPO app is also a simple and valuable gesture: the data collected is essential for protecting local biodiversity. "
Meeting Tuesday, July 15 at 7:30 p.m., at the Auction Room, 13 rue de Rigny, Toul town hall.
