It's eagerly awaited every year by tourism professionals and vacationers. The Teragir association unveiled the 2025 Blue Flag award winners this Thursday. This summer, 388 beaches and 104 marinas will be eligible to fly the Blue Flag, making a total of 492. This figure is down from 505 sites across the country in 2024.

Occitanie (again) at the top of the charts

This year again , it is the Occitanie region that takes the top spot in the rankings with 120 certified sites (compared to 128 in 2023), distinguished in 10 of its departments, Teragir indicates in a press release. The association specifies that within this region, the departments of Hérault and Pyrénées-Orientales have the largest number of certified beaches: 38 and 31 respectively.

Occitanie is closely followed by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, which is almost tied, with 119 sites (compared to 113 in 2023). For its part, the Var department, with 44 beaches and 15 ports, has obtained the highest number of certifications nationwide.

Four municipalities are joining the list for the first time: Osselle-Routelle (Doubs), La Couarde sur-Mer (Charente-Maritime), Soursac (Corrèze) and Gourdon (Lot). As well as two new ports: Port Larousselle (Charente-Maritime) and Port Honfleur (Calvados).

Pavillon Bleu also highlighted the exemplary biodiversity initiatives of its winners. La Rochelle ( Charente-Maritime ) was recognized for a project to recreate the Tasdon marshland, which aims to combat urban sprawl. The port of Dieppe ( Seine-Maritime ) received an award for a plankton study and observation initiative in partnership with the Eco2Nature association.

The recognized "environmental and tourism label" is obtained after an in-depth study of nearly a hundred criteria: responsible water management, bathing water quality, renewable energy, environmental education and awareness, accessibility for people with disabilities, recovery of wastewater from ports, compliance of sanitation systems, etc. "The program helps beaches and marinas improve their practices thanks to around fifty criteria to considerably reduce their impact on the environment," explains Ghislain Fenouil, head of the Blue Flag label on the Teragir association website.

The year 2025 also marks the 40th anniversary of the label. The Blue Flag was created in 1985 by the Teragir association, under the aegis of the Ministry of the Environment. Since 2001, it has been present on every continent. According to the website of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, 52 countries currently participate in this program, representing 4,212 beaches and 710 marinas. In its 40 years of existence, the Blue Flag has to its credit nearly 5,200 certified sites.
