Typhoon Danas in Taiwan: Two dead, hundreds injured and heavy damage

The typhoon made landfall near Budai in Chiayi County around 11:40 p.m. Sunday with strong winds of up to 222 km/h recorded in the southwest of the island, the local meteorological agency said.
"This is the first time a typhoon has made landfall in Chiayi, and its trajectory was very unusual," the source said. The typhoon left Taiwan on Monday morning, but heavy rains persist.
A 60-year-old man died after a power outage at his home caused his life support to stop working, and another 69-year-old man was killed when a tree fell on him while he was driving his car, the agency said.
Meanwhile, 491 people were treated for injuries, according to the Taiwanese Interior Ministry's National Fire Agency. The storm also caused major power outages across the island, affecting 495,770 households, and 388,419 of them remained without power as of Monday morning.
Over the weekend, Danas dumped more than 500 millimeters of rain on southern Taiwan, the meteorological agency added. Nearly 3,500 people were evacuated, mainly in the mountainous areas around the southern city of Kaohsiung, firefighters said.
