Water resources: new restrictions in Charente-Maritime

Water resources: new restrictions in Charente-Maritime

By SudOuest.fr

The prefecture is imposing new water-saving measures on irrigators in the Aume-Couture basin, on the border between Charente and Charente-Maritime.

As of Thursday, June 19, water withdrawals for agricultural irrigation are subject to new restrictions in the Aume and Couture basins. These restrictions also apply to domestic water uses such as watering vegetable gardens, flowerbeds, and filling swimming pools. Any withdrawals for drinking water distribution are not affected.

This watershed is located in the east of the department, on the border between Charente and Charente-Maritime. The Aume is a right-bank tributary of the Charente that flows into the commune of Ambérac. According to the decree issued by the prefecture in La Rochelle, the limitation of abstraction applies to both surface water and groundwater. The Aume-Couture basin is placed at the "alert" stage.

The risk of water shortages also affects the Curé and Sèvre Niortaise basins in the north of the department, as well as the South and North Marshes of Rochefort. Filling the ponds with tons is now prohibited.
