Extremadura does not agree with Mazón's proposal to eliminate the regional nuclear eco-tax.

Extremadura does not agree with Mazón's proposal to eliminate the regional nuclear eco-tax.

Mérida, May 12 (EFE).- The Regional Government of Extremadura does not agree with the proposal by the president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, to unilaterally eliminate the regional "ecotax" on nuclear power plants. Instead, it should be done as part of a comprehensive review of the energy tax system, according to Regional Government spokesperson Victoria Bazaga.

At the press conference following the Government Council meeting, Bazaga responded to questions about Mazón's announcement yesterday to begin the process of eliminating this regional tax and about the proposal presented today by the Vox Parliamentary Group in the Extremadura Assembly in this regard.

Yesterday, during his visit to the Cofrentes Nuclear Power Plant in Valencia, he announced that the Consell (regional council) will begin the process of eliminating the regional "ecotax" applied to electricity generation using nuclear technology because, he said, it has no impact on the environment and, furthermore, the tax eliminates business competitiveness and jeopardizes energy independence.

Furthermore, Vox's parliamentary spokesperson, Oscar Fernández, attributed this "first step" by the Valencian Council to Vox's demands in this region.

However, the spokesperson for the Extremaduran government clarified that "Mazón has a very specific and very special situation, and we respect his situation, which requires him to work differently." However, she emphasized that "it's not the same situation as Extremadura. We don't make comparisons, although we respect it."

Bazaga said that the Regional Government of Extremadura is willing to lower taxes on the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant (CNA), but within the framework of a comprehensive review of the entire energy tax system, and that this framework "takes into account the efforts made by producing regions, which are neither benefited nor reflected in revenue collection."

For the spokesperson for the Extremaduran government, this analysis must be carried out jointly with the central government, businesses, and regional governments, "and not unilaterally, which always harms them."

Furthermore, he insisted that Extremadura hopes that the government's "obsession" with closing nuclear plants will subside and the situation can be reversed.
