PODCAST Why the government is opting for direct electrification

According to the cabinet, direct electrification is the most promising path to making industry more sustainable. However, this path is not smooth and has some bumps and bends.

Last week, Minister Sophie Hermans (Climate and Green Growth, VVD) presented a vision for the future of energy-intensive industry on behalf of the cabinet. While there are several possible routes to making industry more sustainable, direct electrification is the most anticipated. Editor Joep Westerveld explains why in this podcast.

In the news summary, presenter Ilse Akkermans, editor Joep Westerveld, and editor-in-chief Wouter Hylkema discuss the global capacity for safely storing CO₂ underground. Research indicates that this capacity is much lower than previous estimates, but this research has drawn considerable criticism, particularly due to its strict requirements for safe storage. Furthermore, to guarantee the security of electricity supply, the Netherlands must implement a central capacity market as soon as possible. This is the recommendation of the industry association Energie-Nederland to Minister Hermans.
