The superpower is breaking records. It's extracting more and more coal.

India plans to increase domestic coal production to 1.15 billion tons by fiscal year 2026, which would meet 83% of its total coal demand and strengthen its path towards energy self-sufficiency.

The world's largest coal mining company, Coal India, is also considering the exploitation of other raw materials. In addition to increasing coal production, Coal India is also placing significant emphasis on the extraction of other minerals.

Coal India is already in advanced talks to acquire overseas assets, with a particular focus on lithium-rich regions such as Australia, Argentina and Chile.

Coal India is targeting sales of 900.24 million tonnes of coal in the financial year 2025-26 , a significant increase of 18 per cent from the 762.98 million tonnes achieved in the financial year 2024-25. Production is also expected to increase to 875 million tonnes of coal, a 12 per cent increase.

Coal India also recently reaffirmed its commitment to increase annual coal production to 1 billion tonnes by 2028-2029.
