Half a million people must evacuate their homes due to unprecedented rains in Japan

Japanese authorities on Friday urged around half a million people to evacuate their homes after issuing a maximum level warning for unprecedented rainfall in the southern region of Kagoshima.
The storms come after a period of extreme heat in many parts of the Asian country, which saw a record temperature of 41.8°C.
Television footage showed murky, surging waters overflowing their banks and flooding homes in Kagoshima.
About 530,000 people in the prefecture, as well as neighboring Miyazaki, have been urged to evacuate or take alternative measures, the fire and disaster management agency said.
In Aira, another city in Kagoshima, two people were rescued from a house destroyed by a landslide, a local fire department official told AFP . A woman in her 30s is missing.
According to state broadcaster NHK , citing unnamed local officials, several buildings collapsed in the area.
According to Kyodo News, more than 490 millimeters of rain fell in 24 hours in an area of Kagoshima, the largest amount ever recorded in the region.
Domestic flights from the local airport have been cancelled.
